Geografy

Ireland, also known as the Republic of Ireland is a country in north-western Europe consisting of 26 of the 32 counties of the island of Ireland.

Climate

The island's lush vegetation, a product of its mild climate and frequent rainfall, earns it the sobriquet the Emerald Isle.

Overall, Ireland has a mild but changeable oceanic climate with few extremes.

The climate is typically insular and temperate, avoiding the extremes in temperature of many other areas in the world at similar latitudes.

Folklore- myths

The Pooka – beware these shape changers

The pooka (or púca) are shape-changers that are some of the most feared creatures in Irish mythology and folklore. According to Irish stories, they were said to bring either good or bad fortune to those who saw them and were particularly feared around times of harvest.

The leprechauns – the most famous little people

Leprechauns or “Leath bhrògan” are the cultural symbol of Ireland, with their names translated from ‘shoemaker’. They were said to roam Ireland before humans, with a unique hat and red hair.

Holidays

St. Patrick’s Day, held on 17 March, originally was to celebrate Christianity coming to Ireland but has become a day to celebrate all things Irish around the world.

Imbolc (im-blc), celebrated on 1–2 February and also known as St. Brigid’s Day, marks the beginning of spring.

Beltane (bel-tein), on 30 April–1 May, is the Gaelic May Day festival.

Lughnasadh(loo-nah-sah) marks the beginning of the harvest season and is celebrated on 1 August, often with feasts of newly harvested crops, music, and games.
