Five Type of Essays
1. Opinion Essay (Agree, Disagree, To what extent)
Example: The best way to improve health is to do regular exercise. To what extent do you agree?
2. Advantages and Disadvantages Essay
Example: Some people believe that children at secondary school should be streamed, that is, taught in classes according to ability rather than taught in mixed ability classes. Do you think that the advantages of streaming children at secondary school outweigh its disadvantages?
3. Problems and Solutions Essay
Example: An increasing number of professionals such as doctors and teachers, are leaving their own poorer countries to work in developed countries. What problems does this cause? What can be done to deal with this situation?
4. Discussion Essay (Both views and opinions)
Example: Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the place to learn this. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.
5. Two-Part Questions Double Essay
Example: In spite of the advances made in agriculture, many people around the world still go hungry. Why is this the case? What can be done about this problem?

Structure
• General Statement - Focus on the main idea of the essay
• Background Statement - Paraphrase the question statement
• Thesis Statement - Give an introduction to your ideas

Approximately 40 to 50 words
Body Paragraph One - P2
Structure:
• Introduce first idea (Opening)
• Explain first idea (Reason)
• Give example of first idea (Evidence)
• Refer back to first idea (Closing)

Approximately 80 to 100 words

Structure:
• Introduce first idea (Opening)
• Explain first idea (Reason)

• Restate the thesis statement
• Paraphrase both body points in a brief way
