The Big Sheep is a mystery-based novel by American-British writer Raymond Chandler. In Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep General Sternwood hires private investigator Philip Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart) to help him resolve the gambling debts of his wild young daughter, Carmen. Vivian, Sternwood's oldest daughter, steps in to help when she senses the scenario is more complicated, including a casino owner and a recently lost family friend. As persons connected to the Sternwoods begin to be murdered, Marlowe finds himself drawn deeper into the investigation. Marlowe investigates Geiger's bookstore and meets Agnes, the clerk. He determines that the store is a pornography lending library. He follows Geiger home, stakes out his house, and sees Carmen enter. Later, he hears a scream, followed by gunshots and two cars speeding away. He rushes in to find Geiger dead and Carmen drugged and naked. Marlowe pays a visit to General Sternwood. He returns Carmen's gun, and she attempts to shoot him for declining her advances. He disarms her and reveals that Carmen is the one who murdered Regan for refusing to sleep with her. Eddie and Vivian Mars had attempted to protect Carmen by concealing the body and fabricating the myth that Regan had run off with Mona Mars. Vivian assures Marlowe that Carmen will be dispatched to seek competent assistance.
