Antigone (The Oedipus Plays) is a tragedy-based play. Antigone was the third play in the Oedipus trilogy written by the great Greek playwright Sophocles. Oedipus, King of Thebes, receives a party of citizens led by an ancient priest before the play begins. The epidemic that is destroying the city is described by the priest as a blight on the land that causes famine and sickness. Oedipus Former king of Thebes, now a blind beggar who wanders from place to place. Oedipus suffers abuse and rejection. Antigone is very much her father's daughter, and she begins her play with the same swift decisiveness with which Oedipus began his. Within the first fifty lines, she is planning to defy Creon's order and bury Polynices. Unlike her father, Antigone possesses a remarkable ability to remember the past. The priest asks the king to save Thebes once more, recalling Oedipus' early victory over the Sphinx. Oedipus shows his sorrow and anxiety, and says that he has already dispatched his brother-in-law Creon to the oracle in an attempt to put an end to the disease. As Oedipus talks, Creon returns with the oracle's message: The plague will end when Laius (the former King murderer's) is murdered or banished. Oedipus promises to track down the culprit and save the city right now.
