Antigone Mind Map

Antigone is a tragedy play. Polynices and his allies laid siege to Thebes, but the city remained unconquered. Polynices and his brother Eteocles, on the other hand, are both dead, having been killed by each other as a result of their father Oedipus' curse. Antigone tells Ismene outside the city gates that Creon has ordered that Eteocles, who died defending the city, be buried with full honors, but Polynices, the invader, is left to fester. Additionally, Creon has stated that anyone attempting to bury Polynices will be stoned to death in public. Antigone is furious, and she tells Ismene about her plan to bury Polynices in secret, violating Creon's orders. Antigone violently rejects Ismene after she timidly refuses to defy king, and goes off to bury her brother alone. Creon discovers that someone attempted to offer Polynices a ritual funeral and asks that the perpetrator be apprehended and brought before him. Creon's son Haemon, who was supposed to marry Antigone, counsels his father to reconsider his decision. Haemon accuses Creon of arrogance, while Creon accuses Haemon of showing unmanly weakness by side with a lady. Creon, alone and despondent, accepts responsibility for everything that has happened and prays for fast death. The play concludes with a solemn warning from the chorus that pride will be met with fate's blows.
