Anthem Mind Map

The protagonists in Ayn Rand's novella Anthem (1937), like many dystopian fictions, lose their individuality and self-identity. Science and study are rigorously regulated as the planet enters a new dark age. As the novel begins, the protagonist, Equality 7-2521, is writing his life story in a tunnel lit only by candlelight. He utilizes plural pronouns to refer to himself, such as "us." Anthem tells the story of a society destroyed by collectivism. Children in this dystopian society are raised in group homes, separated from their parents. This is how equality was raised, but he believes he was cursed. He is an outlier because of his capacity to learn quickly. After excelling in the science of things, he intends to pursue a career as a scholar, but the Council of Vocations denies him that ambition and instead assigns him the life mandate of street sweeper. Equality discovers electricity during his experiments, which had been forgotten since its use before the second dark period. The equality learns how to utilize the word "I" and teaches it to The Golden One. The two adopt new names based on what they've read in the books. Gaea is given to the Golden One, and Prometheus is given to Equality. They want to establish a world in which everyone has restored their sense of self.
