Angela's Ashes Mind Map

Angela's Ashes is a Non-fiction Memoir. Frank McCourt's memoir Angela's Ashes (1996) is about his childhood in Brooklyn, New York, and Limerick, Ireland. McCourt's book recounts his early years in Brooklyn, New York, as well as his destitute infancy and youth in Limerick, Ireland, when he returned with his parents, Angela and Malachy McCourt. Frank McCourt, Angela's Ashes follows the experiences of young Frankie and his family as they try against all odds to escape the poverty endemic in the slums of pre-war Limerick. More than forty years after leaving poor Ireland, the author decided to narrate his own narrative in the present tense. This temporal distance allowed McCourt to come to terms with the atrocities and tragedies he faced as a child in 1930s Ireland, including deaths of three siblings, typhoid sickness, the death of a parent, and years of starvation. Throughout the memoir, McCourt remains objective, never lecturing, hectoring, or remonstrating. While he may be scathing about his father's alcoholism, he balances his treatment of Malachy McCourt with love memories. Similarly, he does not spare his mother, but the reader never doubts that she was a wonderful mother. The emotional shame instilled by the Catholic Church, particularly in matters of sexuality. In addition, McCourt's memoir is a testament to how humor may help people overcome adversity.
