The Analects is a non-fiction philosophy. The Analects of Confucius is a foundational Confucian text written by the sage's disciples after his death. The Analects is a work compiled from remarks, stresses the importance of scholarship and discussions of Confucius, a Chinese philosopher, in his final years (72-75 years old). The dialogues and reflections in the text take place during the Warring States Period (475-222 BC), a time of great turmoil and geopolitical restructuring when vassals of the incumbent sovereign (Zhou Dynasty) defected and declared themselves independent of Zhou, becoming kingdoms in their own right. The Analects must be read and interpreted within this context. Because of the regionalism and factionalism that afflicted China at the time, Confucius specifies what people, communities, and local and national governors must do to restore a unified, harmonious, peaceful, and orderly society. As a result, the reader will come across Confucius' emphasis on the importance of respecting one's elders and authority figures, the importance of all members of society observing and abiding by traditional rituals and ceremonies, and the importance of all people, especially those in positions of power, cultivating the highest moral virtue, which Confucius refers to as "manhood." According to Confucius, one single virtue is sufficient to lead one's conduct away from evil and crime and toward justice and harmony.
