The novel is narrated by Jack Burden, a political reporter who comes to work as Governor Stark's right-hand man. Jack is scion of an aristocratic family who wanders aimlessly through life, never finishing his history dissertation or marrying Anne Stanton, his first love. He is a cynic who strives to keep his distance from life and people. Willie's words and passion captivate Jack, as they do many others. He abandons his rich family to work as one of Willie's aides. Willie had an affair with Anne, Jack's former love, whose brother Adam oversees hospital that Willie founded. Adam murders Willie and is then slain by Willie's security squad after learning of the affair. Jack decides to leave politics and reevaluate his life. He finally marries Anne and resumes work on a book about Civil War soldier, who was the topic of his abandoned dissertation.
