The Canterbury Tales

The Canterbury Tales mind map is Satire based Epic Poem. The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories based around a frame story, which was a popular and well-established genre at the time. The extreme diversity in Chaucer's Tales distinguishes it from most other narrative "collections" in this genre. The majority of story collections had a common topic, which was frequently religious. A trip to the shrine of St. Thomas Becket in Canterbury, Kent, serves as the collection's framing device. he journey's 30 pilgrims meet at the Tabard Inn in Southwark, just across the Thames from London. This framing mechanism allowed Chaucer to bring individuals from all walks of life together, including knights, monks, merchants, and millers. Each narrative has a name given to it by the person who recounts it, such as The Knight's Tale or The Miller's Tale. The use of a pilgrimage as the framing device enabled Chaucer to bring together people from many walks of life: knight, prioress, monk; merchant, man of law, franklin, scholarly clerk; miller, reeve, pardoner; wife of Bath and many others. The multiplicity of social types, as well as the device of the storytelling contest itself, allowed presentation of a highly varied collection of literary genres: religious legend, courtly romance, racy fabliau, saint’s life, allegorical tale, the beast fable.
