"Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" was the conclusion of Brown's lifelong interest in Western history, which began when he was a little lad growing up in Arkansas. The book recounts the history of American expansionism from the perspective of Native Americans who have suffered as a result. Brown outlines the displacement of Native Americans as a result of forced relocations and years of battle perpetrated by the US government. The consequence is a massacre of Navajo bystanders. The US Army General James Carleton orders the Navajos to relocate to a reservation at Bosque Redondo, where the Apache had recently been moved, but is met with resistance. Employing a scorched-earth campaign, Kit Carson and Carleton force a large majority of resistant Navajos and Apache to surrender and flee to the reservation. Manuelito and a few other Navajo leaders refuse to surrender but finally agree to relocate to the Bosque in 1866 "for the sake of the women and children", signing a peace treaty on June 1, 1868.
