From 1945 to 1955, he was Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, and from 1945 to 1969, he was President. He was Chairman and First Secretary of the Workers' Party of Vietnam, and was a Marxist–Leninist. Ho Chi Minh was born in the Central Vietnamese province of Ngh An. From 1941 through 1945, he was the leader of the Viet Minh independence movement. It began as an umbrella organization for all parties fighting for Vietnam's independence, but after 1945, the Communist Party gained majority support. In 1945, Ho Chi Minh led the Communist-led Democratic Republic of Vietnam to victory over the French Union at the Battle of in Biên Ph, effectively ending the First Indochina War and dividing Vietnam, with the Communists controlling North Vietnam. During the Vietnam War, from 1955 to 1975, he was a significant player in the People's Army of Vietnam and the Viet Cng. Due to health issues, Ho formally stepped down from power in 1965 and died in 1969. In the end, North Vietnam defeated South Vietnam and its allies, and Vietnam was formally unified in 1976.
