Heart failure has traditionally been regarded as a hemodynamic syndrome characterized by fluid retention, high venous pressure, and low cardiac output. However, over the last decade, it has also been found to be a rapidly fatal syndrome due to the deterioration of the sick heart and progressive dilation (remodeling). The importance of prognosis is that treatments that initially improve dysfunction such as high venous pressure and low cardiac output often do not improve survival, and some hemodynamic-improving drugs worsen long-term prognosis.
