Etiology

Risk Factors

Age, 85% of patients are >70 years old

Previous trauma to joint

Obesity

Race, lower among Chinese patients, slightly higher in Europeans

Gender, more common in females over age 55, more common in males 45 and younger

Daily stress to weight-bearing joints

Genetic Component (MCF2L gene)

Epidemiology

Most common joint disease, 32 million Americans effected

50% of patients effected are 65 and older

Slowly progressive disorder effecting articular cartilage of weight bearing joints causing joint narrowing subchondral bone thickening and ultimately pain.

Diagnostics

X- Ray, MRI, Bone Scan

Arthrocentesis with synovial fluid culture to identify infection, inflammatory arthritis, or crystal arthropathy

Infection or Bleeding in the joint
