1. Characteristics and classification of living organisms

- Characteristics of living organisms

Living things are highly organized

All living things have an ability to respond to their environment.

The smallest part of an organism is a cell.

Tissues are organized into organs like the heart.

Most complex of all is the biosphere. 

All living things have an ability to acquire materials and energy.

Example:

young children we learned to avoid hot stoves and busy streets.

- Classification and Diversity of living organisms

Archaea: very ancient prokaryotic microbes

Eubacteria: More advanced prokaryotic microbes.

Eukaryota: All life forms with eukaryotic cells including plants and animals

2. Organisation and maintenance of the organism

- Excretion in humans

The first stage in clearing the blood is filtration

Tubular secretion is the passage of certain substances out of the capillaries directly into the renal tubules.

During reabsorption, needed substances in the filtrate travel back into the bloodstream. Reabsorption occurs in the renal tubules.

- Respiration

Cellular respiration

Anaerobic respiration

Maintenance respiration

the amount of cellular respiration required for an organism to maintain itself in a constant state

- Enzymes

 Oxidoreductases: catalyze oxidation/reduction reactions

 Transferases: transfer a functional group (e.g. a methyl or phosphate group)

Hydrolases: catalyze the hydrolysis of various bonds

Lyases: cleave various bonds by means other than hydrolysis and oxidation
