Pathophysiology
- The urinary tract, from kidney to urethralmeatus, is sterile and resistant tobacteria and colonize, causing infection.
- Escherichia coli
- This infection causes painful urination, flank pain, hematuria, and bacteriuria, dysuria
- May lead to pyelonephritis, cystitis, andsystemic infection.
Assessment
- Assess changes in patient's urinary urgencyand frequency.
- Assess patient's knowledge aboutpreventing UTIs and how they occur.
- Assess patient's urine: color, concentration, odor, and volume.
Complications
- Renal failure
- Bacteria can spread throughout the entireurinary system.
- Sepsis
- Bacteria that invades the urinary systemcan result in the bacteria entering thebloodstream, causing sepsis.
Nursing Interventions
- Encourage patient to void frequently toempty the bladder completely. This canreduce the amount of bacteria in the urine.
- Administering analgesics and applicationof heat pad can help relieve pain.
- Educate patient on urinating after takingbaths and sexual intercourse. Educatepatient on use of cotton underwear.
Tests
- Urine culture
- This test involves identifyingmicroorganisms that are present in apatient's urine sample.
- STI tests
- A UTI can be transmitted sexually.
- CT Scan
- This imaging test can detectpyelonephritis.
Nursing Diagnosis
- Altered urinary elimination related toinfection.
- Acute pain related to infection
- Self-care deficit related to urinary tractinfection.
- At risk for injury to urinary tract related toindwelling catheter as evidenced by urinarytract infection.
